Seduction

The French teacher dabs perfume from Paris on our wrists.
The English teacher sits cross-legged reading love poems to us.

My dancing shoe, native orchids Lillie grew and painted in Talisman, Kallista, and Melissa's terracotta shards dug up from her garden in Tasmania, fill me with pungent scents of flowers and fresh dug soil, and sounds of shattering shards of Grecian urns, and memories of inspiring women. One dancing round the classroom with her little bottle of perfume, dabbing scent on wrists of boys and girls. The other woman reading us Keats's Ode to a Grecian Urn, with one hand holding the book and her other hand down the neck of her frock holding her breast.

The librarian who introduced me to Isadora Duncan was driven to school every morning in a soft-top car with running boards. She never wore a scarf. It was she who said to learn a new word every day.

Mum gives this book to my cousin Richard Roberts. Years later he tells me this book and her encouragement inspired his early puppet shows, and lifelong career as a designer of stage sets and costumes. The same book inspired my animation, Beware of Pedestrians.
