The French teacher brings perfume and dabs it on our wrists.
The English teacher sits on her desk and reads us love poems.

My old dancing shoe, native orchids Lillie grew and painted in Talisman, and Melissa's terracotta shard dug up from her garden in Tasmania, bring it all back: the French teacher dancing round the classroom with her little bottle of perfume, dabbing scent on wrists of boys and girls, the English teacher reading Keats's Ode to a Grecian Urn, one hand holding the book and the other down the neck of her frock, as if holding her breast. I look at this picture and conjure the pungent perfumes of native Australia and the shattering sound of ancient Greek urns and shards falling softly into newly dug soil.

1965: English model Jean Shrimpton caused consternation at the Melbourne Cup wearing a mini-skirt without gloves or hat.
