1961. 2 January: Oral contraceptives are first sold in Australia.
17 Jan. President Dwight Eisenhower gives his final State of the Union Address to Congress. In a Farewell Address the same day, he warns of the increasing power of a "military-industrial complex."
1961. 20 January to early March: Disastrous bushfires affect Western Australia, completely destroying a number of towns.
1961. 25 February: Last electric tram service runs in Sydney.
23 June: Australia signed the Antarctic Treaty.
12 April: Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin becomes the first human in space, orbiting the Earth once before parachuting to the ground.
June 16:Soviet ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev defects to the West at Paris-Le Bourget Airport while on tour with the Kirov Ballet.
1961. 12 August: Richmond become the only team since 1922 to fail to score a goal in a VFL/AFL match.
1961. 31 October: Parkes radiotelescope officially opened by the Governor General
30 November: Ansett-ANA Flight 325, a Vickers Viscount aircraft, crashes into Botany Bay shortly after takeoff, killing all 15 on board.
