Ancestors and descendants
I teach full time at the Conservatorium High School, Sydney: Art, English, Puppetry, Animation. My daughter Katherine in Melbourne gives birth to twin boys. My cousin Richard and I participate in the Tom Roberts Festival, Inverell. Richard brings his son Al, a graffiti artist at that time.
2005. I took this photo of the spot in Inverell where my ancestor Tom Roberts painted Bailed Up.
I came to participate in the tri-annual Tom Roberts Festival, developed by Camilla McCrae and a team of local event managers, designers, conservators and historians. The festival featured a re-enactment of the Bailed Up picture with descendants of some of the original people in the picture performing. At the previous festival, Uncle Peter, my father's brother, played a part in that.

Cousin Richard Roberts (left) and me (right) at the 2005 Tom Roberts Festival where Richard talks with local students about how he goes about designing sets and costumes for a play. As I remember he said: First, read the play right through, with no pre-conceived ideas about 'right' or 'wrong'. Allow the playwright's words to suggest the forms, colours, tones and textures that evolve as it progresses. Then re-read the play several times and make drawings and notes as you go, of things you imagine on the stage. Listen, imagine, and engage all your senses.

I lead a workshop with Inverell community members to make a personal thesaurus of words and pictures that tell the stories of their lives.

2005. Nov 11. Birth of first grandchildren, Melbourne
Drawing from my journal. Reflecting on how differently people experience life. How fulfilled my daughter looks.
In Melbourne. 9th April 2005. I wake from a dream about writing - the same dream I woke from yesterday. I can't quite remember., but it's about writing about film, writing from another point of view.
Idea: I have trouble remembering what happens in books. Just after I've read a book, I find it hard to retell the story. Is it because I concentrate more on how it's told rather than the action? The imagery, the "sparkle" (or whatever) of the language. [read Gould's Book of Fish].
EVENTS
The world population on January 1, 2005, was estimated to be 6.545 billion people and increased to 6.629 billion people by January 1, 2006.
YouTube was launched; "Me at the zoo" was the first video on the platform.
There were 32 conflicts in 2005 that caused at least 25 fatalities, all of which were intrastate wars involving violent non-state actors.[4] Five of these resulted in over 1,000 fatalities: the Iraqi insurgency, the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan, the Kashmir insurgency, the Nepalese Civil War, and the Colombian conflict.
The highest-grossing film globally in 2005 was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, followed by Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Critically acclaimed films from 2005 include Brokeback Mountain and A History of Violence.
