In Christchurch we go as a family to see Maori Poi dancers. On a darkened stage dancers swing tiny lights from invisible strings, tracing patterns held briefly in the air before fading away.
As we watch the women dance, Dr Geoff Goding arrives in Beechworth and Nadya's future shapes up. When Nadya was around 15 she was approaching men for sex in our street in Glen Waverley, and at the local pub - the Mountain View. It was then that she was assessed by Dr Goding and diagnosed with schizophrenia. Geoff introduced family therapy to Australia. He also worked as a Superintendent at the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum where he invited residents to staff meetingsto discuss how they wanted to spend their leisure time. He enabled them to form clubs where they could do what they liked: arts, crafts, reading, writing, performing, gardening and so on.
I remember a family meeting with Geoff at the Bouverie Clinic in Melbourne. I was about seven. I remember fidgeting as we sat in a room around a big wooden table. Geoff invited me to play by myself in the hall. The walls of the hall were tall. High up on the walls were stained glass windows. Each window showed an animal. At one end of the hall was a stage with red velvet curtains. I danced to the dancing lights on the floor that were cast by coloured lights from the stained glass above.
EVENTS
1952: On February 1st the Mental Hygiene Authority came into existence in Australia. Dr Geoffrey Goding was appointed as a Psychiatrist Superintendent at Mayday Hills Hospital Beechworth after spending several years in England studying re-socialisation programmes. He was anxious to bring about a fresh change to the hum-drum of patient's daily lives. His aims - occupation, proper classification and freedom. He set about organizing patients committees so that they could have a say in the organization of their time..

Dr Geoff Goding was primarily responsible for introducing Family Therapy to Victoria in the late 1960s.
