In Carmel Bird's novel The White Garden, I recognise my feelings at this time, moving from the old place in the forest to the new place in the suburbs: "The saffron Sound of the Pipes...The devil can implant deep melancholy in the spirit, and the despondent soul should look at the sky and take a walk and create a little music of its own."
There was something about Talisman that held us together. Was it the way the rooms radiated out from the central chimney? The wood stove in the kitchen always cooking something? The studio in the garden big enough to dance around?
