An investigation of the creative process of writer Carmel Bird
In 1960 my family struggles to live in the new house in Glen Waverley. A tiny house built with my father's war service loan. Compared to Talisman it is sterile and cramped. No garden to speak of, no studio, no place to make stuff, no hiding places.
There was something about Talisman that held us all together. Was it the way the rooms radiated out from a central chimney? Was it the wood stove in the kitchen that was always cooking something? Was it the studio in the garden big enough for dancing?
In these words from Carmel Bird's novel The White Garden, I recognise my feelings about moving from the old place in the forest to the new place in the suburbs: "The saffron Sound of the Pipes...The devil can implant deep melancholy in the spirit, and the despondent soul should look at the sky and take a walk and create a little music of its own."
