Terra Incognita
These pictures are from Terra Incognita (1993-1995), an animated interactive exploration of the creative process in some writings by Carmel Bird.
The aim was to inspire people to consider their own identities in relation to their own countries and languages.
I made paintings to show changes in the atmosphere over a year, of Mount Arthur in Lutruwita (Tasmania), near where Carmel grew up. I worked with software engineer Ruth Luxford (using Macromedia Director), to make an animated interactive "year clock". I placed a touch screen in a suitcase as part of the installation I conceived with Tasmanian artist Melissa Smith. Visitors to the installation could turn the hands of a clock displayed on a touch screen, to enter a virtual maze - a metaphor for the human mind. The aim was to offer visitors a sense of the creative process, of opening up their own minds to freely associate, and allow recognition of relationships not hitherto seen, between spoken and written words, sounds, pictures and animations.
