In 2017 I meet up with this painting that I did in 1975 (or thereabouts) and gave to family friends. Seeing it again triggers thoughts and feelings from that time, of being simultaneously shaped and shaping the world around me. A scary omnipotence. Around that time I was immersed in 'Oceanic' Jungian dream analysis with Raynor Johnson. I felt 'all at sea' with this, as if my whole world was falling apart. On Thursday 7th Decemer 2017 I read: "He owned a property called "Santiniketan" ("abode of peace") at Ferny Creek in the Dandenong Ranges outside Melbourne. There he hosted regular meetings of a religious and philosophical discussion group led by the yoga teacher Anne Hamilton-Byrne. This group became known as "The Family", a cult that adopted a large number of children and treated them cruelly until Victorian police rescued them on 14 August 1987. Hamilton-Byrne and her husband Bill were extradited from the United States six years later and faced criminal charges."

I still believe that we are shaped by the world as well as contributing to shaping it, but I've since learned to distinguish between reason, imagination, and manipulation.
