Terra Incognita
These pictures are from Terra Incognita (1993-1995), the animated interactive installation I made for exploring the creative process in writings by Carmel Bird.
My aim was to inspire people to consider the creative process in their own ways of identifying themselves, in relation to their own country and language - language as art in all its forms.
At this time I was living in Launceston Tasmania not far from where Carmel was born and grew up. Over a year I observed and made paintings of Mount Arthur as I saw it from my studio window. I also made pictures from my readings of Carmel's novels, The White Garden, and Cherry Ripe.
The paintings of Mount Arthur show changes in the atmosphere over a year - changes in tone, colour, texture and movement. I photographed the paintings and worked with software engineer Ruth Luxford to make an animated interactive "year clock". Visitors to the installation could turn the hands of a clock displayed on a touch screen, and enter a virtual maze - a metaphor for the human mind - inspired by an ancient Celtic pattern. The aim was to offer a sense of the creative process, of opening the mind to freely associate, and allow recognition of relationships not hitherto seen, between spoken and written words, sounds, pictures and animations.
Before they could be properly photographed and catalogued, many of these pictures were destroyed or damaged in a house fire in Melbourne.
