My first teaching job is with Ryllton Viney, Head of Art at Wesley College Prahran. Wesley is still an all-boys school but more female teachers are being employed in preparation for its transition to a co-ed school. Ryllton employs me to teach art and English, and to introduce animation as a bridge between these subjects.

Ryllton was born in Tasmania and studied art with Bea Maddock who also taught me (in Melbourne). Ryllton's art room was more of a drop-in place than a classroom. Boys came to smoke, play music and generally hang out.

One time Ryllton and I created and performed a choreography inspired by what we learned from science, of forces in nature and connections between plants and animals. We tore long strips of fabric, dyed them by hand, and wound them around our selves, each other and fellow staff members. We enacted the birth and transformation of ourselves. We called our dance Cocoon. Somewhere in the shipping container load of stuff that's recently been released from storage in Tasmania there are photos of us dancing on the stage at Wesley College. When I find them I will place theme here.

1977: May 23. Scientists report using bacteria in a lab to make insulin via gene splicing.

1977: May 25. Star Wars is released in the United States by director George Lucas. It immediately became a major pop culture phenomenon, and became a major box office hit for the next 6 years

1977: May 28. The Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky, United States, is engulfed in fire; 165 are killed inside.
