Message of hope
On December 4th 2015, I hand over a gift for safe delivery
to our new PM Malcolm Turnbull who will open an exhibition in Canberra, immediately after landing from the Paris Climate Summit.
The gift is three things contained in a small envelope: Tom's 'First artist money' given to me by my father, an engraving I'd made of an Antarctic krill, and words of hopethat I'd written for "a more intelligent, creative nation... to better inform sustainable business practices".
Dear Malcolm,
I give you these items of family
memorabilia as a gesture of hope for
the arts and the sciences, and for
my trust in your leadership towards
a more creative, intelligent and
productive Australia.
The coin is the lesser part of a
guinea that Tom received
when he first sold an art work. It's
engraved with a 'T' and wrapped in
paper with his words, "1st Artist
money TR." This was given to my
father Noel, Tom's oldest grandson,
when he studied art at the
Swinburne Technical College,
Victoria. Noel gave it to me when I
studied at the National Gallery
School of Art
(now VCA).
The acrylic piece is engraved with
my first sighting of the birth
of Euphausia superba (Antarctic krill)
at the Australian Antarctic Division
(AAD). This drawing led to me
animating the first sighting of krill
having sex on the sea floor, to help
scientists understand that behaviour.
Knowing how, when and where
marine life forms have sex enables
policy makers to ensure protection of
breeding grounds for future generations.
New work with scientists at AAD
and University of Technology Sydney
(UTS) is animating 'Sex in the Sea'.
We combine art and science to understand
the changing natural world
and feelings of connection,
to better inform and inspire more
sustainable business practices.
