Leaving New Zealand by sea, Noel holds me tight through a howling gale, the ship pitching and rolling. We dock at Port Melbourne on my 5th birthday. My sister Nadya and Mum are seasick and stay below deck in the cabin.

We move into Talisman , Kallista, up in Victoria's Dandenong Ranges. It's the house built by my great grandparents, Tom and Lillie, in the 1930's.

Tom Roberts and Lillie Williamson had died some years before, but their physical presence is strongly felt in the garden and in the house and studio, in their artworks, within the pages of their Visitor's books, and upon what was left of their furniture.

Australia signed the S.E.A.T.O. pact as an adjunct to the A.N.Z.U.S. involving large Western powers , such as the USA , in the South-East Asian region, with the acknowledged goal of containing communist expansion.
