Evolution

Choreography evolves to express connectivity in nature.

1979 Evolution Choreography: Lisa Roberts, Ryllton Viney. Wesley College Senior College, Melbourne.

From 1977 to 1979, I teach art and new media at Wesley College senior school in St Kilda Road Melbourne. I had answered an ad in The Age newspaper for a part-time position as an art teacher. Ryllton was Head of Art. He interviewed me in a large office in the administration section, near the school's main entrance. As I walked in I imagined the architecture intimidating some people but I felt immediately at ease with Ryllton. He made us coffee and we sat on comfy couches and shared our stories. We had both been students of Bea Maddock - he in Tasmania, me in Melbourne - and shared her belief that art-making is the 'risky' business of finding your own path, and the art teacher 's role is to recognise and nurture the interests and natural dispositions of the students.

Ryllton employed me to teach art. Once I was installed, he arranged with the Head of English for me to also teach animation in the Media Studies program. Then a science teacher collaborated with me and Ryllton on animation projects that integrated English, Visual and Performing arts and Science. In 1979, my last year at Wesley, Ryllton and I devised and performed a choreography based on what we learned from science, to express connectivity in nature.
